Hello,

I work in the UK and I'm planning to spend some time working remotely in Portugal. I will pay social security (i.e. national insurance) in the UK. I believe that I will need an A1 form to prove to the Portuguese authorities that I/my employer has paid social security in the UK.

Does anyone know when, to whom, I need to present this A1 form in Portugal?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jay,

You should definitely apply for the A1 form before you move. You apply in the UK through the government website.

From what I can gather, once you're in Portugal then you should submit your A1 form/details to the Instituto da Solidariedade e da Segurança Social (Portugal's social security institute). There's a centre in Lisbon, and a few other scattered around Portugal.

Their website is in Portuguese but Google can provide an adequate translation job.

Otherwise, this Expat Arrivals page on Moving to Portugal provides a general overview of what it's like in the country.

I hope this helps Jay!

Best,

Kyle
