Hey all, Actually I have moved to Johannesburg last month. I have visited before also and the last time I came, I went to a school to get my children's registration done and they assured me that my children would get the admission.

Now, when I came this time, I contacted them and they told me that it has became very difficult for them to give my children the admission and that I should probably look somewhere else but they will still try.

I just feel so hopeless now, being new in the city and not having so much money to afford a good private school, also that its January now and all the schools have opened and no one would give my children the admission. I cant try in public schools as Im afraid of the kind of environment in those schools.

Kindly guide me. Thank you

Hi Tenni

Unfortunately, the admissions lists for private schools are long and the best you could hope for is to have your child put on a waiting list. You have two options, either consider home schooling or, which you've already indicated you don't want to do, consider public schooling until a place at a private school opens up.

Not all public schools in Johannesburg are bad. Quality differs between schools and there are some, especially former "model C" schools, that offer quite a good quality of education- good enough, at least, to fill the gap while you wait for a spot to open up at a private school (I went to one, and have turned out fine).

Have a look at our Education and Schools in Johannesburg page. We're also busy putting together a new, free and downloadable Johannesburg Schools Guide which I'll give you the link to once it's uploaded.

Best of luck,

Xavier
