Does anyone know if the process of getting the permanent residency for South Africa is any quicker/simpler if one has an EU passport? Thanks

Nope, sorry - EU citizenship holds no bearing here in South Africa. You'll have to wait the obligatory 6 to 12 months that normal permanent residency processing requires. The good news is that Home Affairs in South Africa received a bit of a facelift over the course of the last year, so all applications are now dealt with in Pretoria in a centralised manner - which actually seems to have sped up the overall process.

Don't count on too much happening once December starts though. Unfortunately the month is holiday time for government, up until about the second week of January.
