I am visiting Abu Dhabi soon and I need to get a sense of what I should pack. I know I need to be mindful and not wear anything too revealing/short but should I also wear more muted colors? How short is short in terms of skirts? I have a job interview so would like to also get a sense of what's appropriate to wear. Should I stick to jacket and pants or can I do a knee length skirt and jacket? Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks so much!
Even if on the streets you will see a lot of women dressed in traditionally long dresses, pants or skirts, abayas or kurtas, it is not uncommon to see short skirts or very tight clothing. Short skirts mean slightly above the knee for day dresses/ skirts or shorts. But do be mindful of the malls where – especially in the summer - the temperature is kept excessively low, around 20 C, contrasting terribly with the average of 45 C from outside, so do wear some shawl or light cardigan.
Night attire is something you’d wear in any European night club.
Colors are also very different, based on personal preference, so no worries there either.
The thing that you should be mindful off is Fridays, when clothing should be long sleeved – at least 3 quarter lengths for pants/skirts/dresses/shirts, as the city gets full with workers, coming for their one day off, and they usually like to admire very closely any women they see. There is no aggressive behavior, just uninvited prying.
On the beach two piece bikinis or one piece swim wear is acceptable, no topless
Also if you happen to visit around the Holy Month of Ramadan, conservative attire is a must: long sleeves, no tight clothing, no deep cut blouses or dresses. Head scarfs are not a most for anyone who doesn’t want to wear them.
For an interview, you can opt for any business or smart casual clothing, summer appropriate that you’d wear anywhere else. Preferable skirt or dress suits. Also, be mindful of the temperature differences between offices and the outside, which usually is of 20 C.
All being said enjoy Abu Dhabi and good luck with your interview.
In offices any high heels, pump, or high class sandals are apropriate.
If your work is more relaxed, can even wear flip flops, especialy with traditional clothes or abaya.
