Building Homes in Perth?

I'm very curious about the environment with building homes in Perth. I've always dreamed about building my own home and wonder if this would be a good location to do just that or if you have recommendations for a place further into a wooded area that's not super far outside of a city.
I've never been here so a visit is due, just getting a feel for the environment.
