hi all, hoping to travel to alberta beginning of next month with hubby and kids on a skilled visa, do i need to get health insurance or will i be covered? any info grately appreciated.
As long as you have a valid work permit and are in Alberta for 183 days per year, you will be entitled to coverage under the Alberta Healthcare Insurance Plan (AHCIP). While it should technically cover you from the first day you arrive, you will actually not be covered properly till you receive you AHCIP card, which can take a couple of months. Therefore expats are always advised to have some sort of private health insurance in the interim.
Yes the process takes around a month so get started asap.
Applying for AHCIP coverage is quite straightforward. Just download a form from the Alberta Health and Wellness dept's website and complete it and return to the department with the required documents.
You may even be able to get the ball rolling before you leave for Alberta.
