My family and I are moving permanently to Norway in a few months from now. Since Oslo is the most expensive city in the world, we would like to live in a suburb, but not far away from the capital (max. 20 minutes drive) since this is where we will be working. Our daughter is 20 months old, so we would like to live in a family-friendly suburb, with lower rents than Osly. Any suggestions? Thanks

Oslo does indeed have one of the highst cost of livings in the world, and living outside the city can definitely save you some extra cash, especially if you don't have to commute into the capital every day.

Consider the suburbs of : Bærum, Lysaker, Snarøya, Høvik, Sandvika and Bekkestua

All of these are just outside of Oslo, and offer the additional space and minimised hustle and bustle that families tend to favour.

Hi Olga,

You are right the cost of living is very high in Olso. Most Norwegian famillies as well as expats with children opt to live in suburbs to the West of city such as  Marienlyst, Majorstuen, Frogner and Bygdoy.

Take a look at pages on Accomodation in Olso and Areas and Suburbs of Olso to get a better idea of what your options are.

Good luck with the move to Norway !
