Hi Ahloman,

As a self-employed expat in Portugal, you will be subject to compulsory social security contributions every month. I can't seem to find a definitive figure online but it seems to be somewhere in the region of EUR 150 - 180. This must be paid regardless of whatever happens in your business that month; for example, even if you don't make a profit, it will still need to be paid.

This page (click on the "I'm self-employed" tab) can give you a basic idea of the kind of tax rates you can expect. The tax system for self-employed foreigners can also be tricky to navigate and you will most likely need the help of an accountant (although this can be expensive) or at least a translator.

The Expat Arrivals Working in Portugal page has some more information on being self-employed in Portugal. The process for getting foreign qualifications certified in Portugal is outlined here.

Best of luck.

Hi Meagan, I am already in Lisbon for one month. I am working as a freelance web designer. Most I get paid via a third party website called upwork.com Do you know any good accountant who is expert on non-eu self-employed section? Any suggestion would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Thanks for yout post! Unfortunately I don't know of anyone. It might be a good idea to join a few groups for expats in Portugal (like the ones on Facebook) – they might be able to make a few suggestions and recommendations.
