Hi expats, I am moving from the UK to Portugal this summer. One of my biggest concerns is about using hospitals and having access to good medical care. What are hospitals like in Portugal ? Are public hospitals in Portugal of a good standard ? Do expats have access to public healthcare ? Or is it best to go private ? Do most doctors speak English or do I need to converse in Portuguese ? Also, I am planning to take some prescription medicine over from the UK to Portugal. Are there restrictions and will this cause any problems at the airport ? Please let me know your thoughts. Cheers, Kate
You shouldn't have a problem speaking to doctors in English. Most doctors in Portugal can speak English to some degree. As for public hospitals vs private, have a look at our Healthcare in Portugal page for detailed information.
There are no restrictions on bringing medicine into Portugal as long as you have the proper documentation and prescription proving that you need the medicine and that it's for personal use only.
I hope this helps.
Good luck with your move to Portugal.
