Hi All, I am KP, currently residing in India, and have got a job offer in Hong Kong (Quarry Bay) for an IT organization, I will be getting approx 35000 HKD per month after taxes. Here are my questions. 1. I am planning to stay in the surrounding areas of Quarry Bay, and trying to get a 300-400 S.ft of accommodation under 12000 K per month. Is it possible ? 2. My wife will be staying along with me, we are vegetarians, what can be the approximate expenditure for two people, considering a decent life (Not lavish) in a good, family friendly locality ? 3. I am planning to take medical insurance for my wife ? Can I get it under 800 HKD for month ? 4. Will I be able to save 15000 HKD after all my expenses ? Thanks for taking time to read through my questions, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Krishna,

I suggest you take a look at the Cost of Living in Hong Kong page to assist you with you budgetting. Much of a persons expenses are affected by their lifestyle.

My wife is staff nurse in India. We r planning to migrate to Hong Kong Under qmas visa with dependant and child. I am working in jet airways India as aircraft maintenance technician. Is Hong Kong is best place to settle or Canada.. We r confused.. Please let me know. Is writing Hong Kong licence is easy or difficult. Will I get job in aviation.. What about child education. Is it good. Please reply

the cost of living page is pretty poor especially regarding schools. It just lists names of schools and reads like an advert for them. They are all international schools and no fees are given. Not much use!

Ans2: Median Household income in HK is 25K. So apart from housing, you can live with 5K to 20K. Q3: medical insurance for my wife ? Can I get it under 800 HKD for month ? Ans3: Medical insurance depend on individual situation (Age, sex, preexisting conditions) and Sum Insured. So it depends what you want?? Q4: Will I be able to save 15000 HKD after all my expenses ? Ans4: Yes it you want to. Not easy but.

Hello All, This is Venkat SR G from India and am an IT professional, is the 70K HKD is fair enough to live 4 people in Hong Kong? I am looking for housing, kids education 9th and 7 th standard in India, housing, transport, necessaries food, beverages apart from that what will be my savings roughly? Hello I have the same question. I have been offered a job in Hong Kong, net salary around 37k HKD per month. Would this be enough for two people with no children? Considering that we would rent a 1bed apartment at a resonable distance from the city centre, cooking at home most of the time buying local food, adding transportation cost and bills? I really wish to accept the job but need to be sure that the salary will be enough to cover all the expenses for two. Please advice Thanks Cris

Hi Cris,

The best way to figure out whether the salary will be adequate is do a mock-up of a budget and plug in figures found online. Then you can tally up those expenses and see how that compares to the salary you've been offered.

Have a look at the Cost of Living in Hong Kong page. You might find the cost of living table, right at the bottom of the page, particularly useful. For a more comprehensive list of expenses, check out Numbeo and Expatistan. Both websites are an excellent way of estimating costs in a new city.
