I would say wait, or look elsewhere. Libya is still in the process of emerging from war - because let's be honest - that's what it was. You can call it whatever you want - "conflict, turmoil, insurrection" - whatever, the fact of the matter is, the country is now in a transition that comes post-conflict, and lots of basic institutions and former infrastructure is still not up and running (ie. emergency services).
So, unless you don't have any other choice, I would wait.
That said, five of the oil companies operating in Libya have already gone back to work, and have vowed to take serious security precautions to protect their employees. So if you're interested in this line of work, perhaps it's ok?
Dear Stephanie,
Thanks for your valuable advise, in fact it is a shipping company and they are offering me LYD 4,000/- kindly advise me if it is enough to take care of the family needs & education there.
I am planning to work and try my career in Libya. Is it allowed now to work in Libya and if so, how can i apply for a job directly from a company in Libya? My interest and honesty to be part of the success again of Libya in reconstructing their country- Leann, Phils
Many overseas companies in the oil and gas industry pulled all but a skeleton staff from their bases in Libya during the conflict. Although expats are trickling back, there are definitely job opportunities in Libya given that many qualified expats are choosing to find work elsewhere. Whether there is a job in Libya for you will depend largely on your industry. The huge global demand for oil means that there will always be work for those in the industry and related industries, such as aluminum/manufacturing. There are also a great many general investment opportunities in Libya now as the country is anxious to rebuild itself post-Gaddafi.
As to whether it's safe, it's really just a question of how highly you value personal safety and whether you're squeamish about living in a post-conflict area. There are always measures you can take to protect yourself. Although emergency services leave something to be desired, many foreign embassies have emergency contact numbers you can call - become aquainted with these. Also, you would need to always monitor the political situation closely and stay away from areas where there might be protests.
