Background

Founded in 1904, Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama is the oldest German school in East Asia. Teaching is entirely in German. Language requirements for entry differ by age – applicants for secondary school must be fluent in German, while elementary school students should have at least a basic proficiency in German. Those entering Kindergarten are subject to less stringent German language requirements.

Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama is the only school in Japan to offer the Abitur, which grants entry to German universities. Other options have a vocational focus or prepare the student to go on to a technical college. These include the Fachoberschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss, and the Hauptschulabschluss.
