Assalamo aleikum, I am an American Muslim contemplating a move to Qatar in the future and I'm curious about the standards of dress there. As a Muslim I wear the abaya and hijab but we wear our scarves so many different ways in the West and I wondered if there were any standards I should be aware of. I am also curious about how women who wear the niqab fare in Qatar - are they allowed to work in the niqab?

Hi it is recommended that women dress modestly here. However, these recommendations are aimed at women who are used to living in secular liberal states. They are often told to cover their shoulders, avoid bare chests and cover their knees. For you there will be no problem, regardless of how you choose to wear your scarf. Qatari women sometimes wear the niqab themselves so the answer is yes, you are allowed to work in the niqab.

Hi Abigail Trumbo

Anonymous above is correct in saying that women dress modestly.

Have a look at our page on Women in Qatar, which offers insight into dressing, making friends and working among other aspects. This should help with what to anticipate if you choose to move.

Good luck with your decision,
Alex
