Background
Founded in 1904, Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama is the oldest German school in East Asia. Teaching is entirely in German. Language requirements for entry differ by age – applicants for secondary school must be fluent in German, while elementary school students should have at least a basic proficiency. Those entering Kindergarten are subject to less stringent German-language requirements.
Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama is the only school in Japan to offer the Abitur, which grants entry to German universities. Other options have a vocational focus or prepare the student to go on to a technical college. These include the Fachoberschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss, and the Hauptschulabschluss.
