Hi there.
I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the safest rating, Abu Dhabi ranks a solid 8.
The -2 points is the hazardous driving. There is no crime to speak of, one is safe anywhere, anytime. This is because most folks here are expats and anyone suspected of a crime is either jailed or deported!
Safety in Abu Dhabi is not a concern. The emirate, though filled with expats, is governed by Muslim law and punishment for crime is severe. Even expats who break one of the local laws that they're not familiar with - like public drunkenness - can find themselves deported. Thus, for the most part, people behave themselves.
As DavidC said, driving safety on the other hand is a force to be reckoned with. Emiratis are maniacs behind the wheel, and expats coming from countries where everyone drives the speed limit within their designated lanes will certainly have some adjusting to do.
Single females should take the ususal precautions, and you should be aware of your belongings in crowded marketplaces, but otherwise, beware of the intense summer heat and you should be fine.
