One of my best friends is a Kiwi, and has been pestering me to move to Auckland and move in with her. I don't want to be a freeloader, but I am nearly 57 years old, and still need to work to support myself because I don't have a big savings account. Is it even possible for someone my age to find a job there? I have excellent secretarial type skills as well as some retail experience. I know I will have a built-in group of friends because my buddy is very outgoing with a big family. I just don't want to get there and not be able to work. Any ideas/advice? Is this even realistic?

Jan, As a Kiwi currently living in Auckland, the truth is that most Kiwis are heading the other way! Why? Because of lack of jobs and a tight job market here in NZ. Things are tough here even for the locals.
The best advice I can give as a 55 year mature woman is, don't risk packing up and coming over until you do a 'reckie' first. Do some research online to check which are the best recruitment agencies for your skills and experience in Auckland. Then I suggest that you jump on Skype and call them up. See if you can set up appointments in advance and then jump on cheapest flight to Auckland. Bring your C.V. start knocking on doors. The recruitment companies are all within easy walk of Queens Street which is the main street in the CBD. Stay with friends to save money. That way, you can get a feel for what you are coming to without getting into major debt.
