I am a UK citizen resident in Italy. I have rented property in the UK and pay the difference between UK and Italian tax on my taxable income. Mario Monte introduced IVIE tax on property owned overseas. Our tenants pay the Council Tax on our UK property to the UK local council. We are now being asked by the Italian Agenzia Entrata to pay IVIE tax on our UK property too. Surely this is unfair. It's double taxation. Does anybody know if it is right for us to pay IVIE? Does anybody know how this tax is calculated? The Italian Agenzia Entrata don't seem able to answer my questions. The don't seem to understand the legislation themselves!
There are double taxation agreements between the UK and Italy which stop expats being taxed in both their home country and abraod. So if you contact the tax authorities in the UK, they should be able to let you know if you are eligable for a tax refund.
As tax laws change almost every year, I would also advise you to contact a tax professional for the latest information.
Good luck.
