What type of car are you thinking of importing ? You might want to look at options of buying a car once you arrive in Cape Town.
I wouldn't say cars are cheap in South Africa but it might work out worthwhile when you consider all the taxes and fees you will need to import your vehicle. You will also need to consider the time it'll take for you to get the car - it might simply be quicker to sell your old car and by an alternative when you arrive.
There are a wide range of cars available, so I am sure you can find something suitable.
The difference of buying a car in SA and shipping is + - 30%.
That is 30% less to ship it here.
The rule is that you must have owned the car for at least 12 months.
This way you will not pay tax i.e VAT etc.
If you ship 2 cars then you will have to pay VAT on one vehicle.
I have lived here for 30 years and a friend has just shipped his 2 second hand cars.
I have just done the math and am considering buying a new car ex UK, storing it for 12 months with a friend and bringing it over.
You'd need to be a bit more specific, but have a look at our Shipping and Removals in South Africa page for some info.
Hope this helps
