Hello, I am anticipating a job offer in the Netherlands, in Arnhem or Groningen, mainly doing work with the Groningen earthquakes. I am a structural engineer with about 8 years of experience. I am trying to figure out what kind of pay to expect. From what I can tell wages in the Netherlands are significantly lower than in the US while taxes are significantly higher. Is that an accurate assessment? Would I be able to ask for a salary of over 65,000 Euros a year? This is what I calculate to make a comparable salary to the US, even with the 30% tax exemption.

In the next year or two my husband and myself intend to move from the UK to Austria and hopefully buy and run a small guesthouse or apartment house in Carinthia or Styria. So far we have found information about the GKK health insurance which relates to those working for an employer but we are finding it difficult to obtain information for the self-employed. Any info about how we would apply and any estimates about how much it would cost us would be gratefully received.
